Complex System

Complex System

This System in its original configuration was markedly different in some areas, notably the 1 Responses and subsequent sequences and some of the 2 and 3-level openings, which were multi-style openings rather than the more standard variety. The purpose was to two-fold:
  • To give us better tools for slam investigation over the 1 Opening where appropriate.
  • To make it easier to show some hands that give Precision something of a problem (eg: hands with a 5-card Major and a 6-card Minor)
This page gives details of those areas where the complex system differs from the more conventional version taught in BIL. Please note, however, that the 1 sequences, in particular, are very structured and complex, take a lot of concentration to play accurately, and I would recommend that you stay clear of them unless completely confident with the basic system. I will be aiming to provide at least an outline of the Complex System towards the end of the sessions in IAC.

1 Opening & Responses

The requirements for the 1 Opening are identical in the complex system with the sole exception that if you are playing the Complex 2-level Openers, a 1 Opening denies having a 4-card Major and a 6-card Diamond suit and references below to such distributions will simply not apply. The responses and subsequent sequences over 1 are completely different to the normal 1 Opening in that Responder, unless 16+, starts off by giving their point-count range, as follows:-

Initial Responses
  • 1 - Pass shows 0-7 points.
  • 1 - 1 shows 8-10 points or occasionally 0-7 points with a long Major and a Diamond Shortage
  • 1 - 1♠ shows 11-13 points
  • 1 - 1NT shows 14+ points
  • 1 - 2x show 16+ and are Alpha in the suit bid
Notes:
(1) If Responder is a passed hand, then all bidding is completely natural and identical to the normal system.
(2) If there in interference immediately over the 1 Opening, then Responder's initial actions are as follows:-
  • Over 1 - (X)
    • - Pass shows 0-7, or 8-10 with no 4-card Major or 5-card Minor
    • - XX shows 11-13 points, or 16+ with a 5-card or longer Minor
    • - 1/1♠ shows 8-10, natural, with a 4-card or longer suit
    • - 1NT shows 14+ and continuations are as normal
    • - 2♣ / 2 show 8-10 and are natural with a 5-card or longer suit
    • - 2/2♠ show 16+ and are Alpha in the suit bid
  • Over 1 - (1)
    • - Pass shows 0-7, or 8-10 with no 4-card Spades or 5-card Minor
    • - X shows 11-13 points, or 16+ with a 5-card or longer Minor
    • - 1♠ shows 8-10, natural, with a 4-card or longer suit
    • - 1NT shows 14+ and continuations are as normal
    • - 2♣ / 2 show 8-10 and are natural with a 5-card or longer suit
    • - 2/2♠ show 16+ and are Alpha in the suit bid
  • Over 1 - (1♠)
    • - Pass shows 0-7, or 8-10 with no 4 or 5-card Hearts or 5-card Minor
    • - X shows 11-13 points, or 8-10 with 4 or 5-card Hearts
    • - 1NT shows 14+ and continuations are as normal
    • - 2♣ / 2 show 8-10 and are natural with a 5-card or longer suit
    • - 2/2♠ show 16+ and are Alpha in the suit bid
    • - 3♣/3 show 16+ and are Alpha in the suit bid
  • Over 1 - (1NT)
    • - Pass shows 0-7, or 8-10 with no 5-card Suit
    • - X shows 11-13 points, or possibly 14+ at favourable vulnerability
    • - 2x shows 8-10 and are natural with a 5-card or longer suit
    • - 2NT shows 14+ and is effectively Baron, asking for suit to be bid "up-the-line" (Often a 2-suiter)
    • - 3x shows 16+ and are Alpha in the suit bid
  • Over 1 - (2x)
    • - Pass shows 0-7, or 8-10 with no interest in competing
    • - X shows 11-13 points, or 8-10 with an interest in competing (ie: Negative)
    • - 2y are natural and competitive
    • - 3y are natural and forcing
    • - 2NT is Lebensohl, forcing 3♣ after which bids are competitive or invitational depending on whether or not they could have been bid at the 2-level
    • - Fast and Slow Cue-bids and Bids of 3NT carry exactly the same meaning as in normal Lebensohl sequences
Continuations After 1- 1
(As stated above, references to 4-6 hands with a 4-card Major do not apply if using the 2 and 2♠ Openers)
1-1 - 1♠ Shows any 4441-shape hand.
- 1NT Asks, and Opener bids the suit below the singleton. Responder now sets the suit or, with a suitable hand may make a Range Beta Ask in the Singleton Suit. Similarly, if Responder sets the suit, Opener can invite with a maximum.
- 1NT Shows a balanced or semi-balanced hand of a range unsuitable for an opening 1NT. Continuations are identical to those over an opening 1NT except that
- 3x is invitational with a good 6 or 7-card suit of good quality (KQ10xxx minimum), but not much outside
- 2♣ Shows weak 6-card Clubs or 5-card Clubs and 4-card Diamonds. Continuations are natural, 2 and 2♠ showing 5-card or longer suits.
- 2 Shows any hand with 5-card or longer Diamonds except one that is semi-balanced (1NT), or upper-range with 5-card Clubs (3♣) or a 4-card Major (2 or 2♠). All continuations are natural.
- 2 Shows an upper-range hand with 4-card Hearts and a 5-card or longer Diamond suit
- 2♠ forces 2NT. If Responder bids again, then this shows 5-card or longer Spades and a minimum hand. Continuations are natural
- 2NT is a forcing enquiry, implying a maximum or otherwise suitable hand. Now
- 3♣ shows a Singleton Spade (1453 or 1462).
- 3 shows a void Spade (0454 or 0463)
- 3 shows a void Club (4450 or 3460)
- 3♠ shows a singleton Club (3451 or 2461)
- 3NT shows exactly 2452 shape

- 3NT is natural and "to play".
- 2♠ Shows an upper-range hand with 4-card Spades and a 5-card or longer Diamond suit
- 2NT is a forcing enquiry, implying a maximum or otherwise suitable hand. Now
- 3♣ shows a Singleton Heart (4153 or 4162).
- 3 shows a void Heart (4054 or 4063)
- 3 shows a void Club (4360) (Note: 4450 shape bids 2)

- 3NT shows exactly 4252 shape
- 3♣ is strictly "to play" with a 6-card or longer suit. and a minimum hand.
- 3 is strictly "to play" with a minimum.
- 3 is shows a 5-card or longer Heart suit, minimum range.
- 3♠ is invitational, asking Opener to continue if not 4252
- 3NT is natural and "to play".
- 2NT Shows a Maximum hand with 6-card Diamonds, and otherwise semi-balanced (or perhaps unbalanced but with a decent Club stop). All continuations are natural, but Responder tends to bid stops upwards, along the following lines:-
- 3♣ shows a Club stop and implies a weakness in one of the Majors
- 3 denies a Club stop. Opener can continue with good Clubs (hence the reason why unbalanced hands with a good Club stop tend to go this route).
- 3 is natural, at least a 5-card suit.
- 3♠ is natural, at least a 5-card suit.
- 3NT is natural with a maximum balanced hand.
- 3♣ Shows a Maximum hand with at least 5-5 or 6-5 in the Minors. Continuations are entirely natural.
- 3 Shows a Maximum hand with at least 6-card Diamonds and an unbalanced hand. If possible this bid should only be made with a Club stop(s), hands without this bidding 2NT instead. All Continuations are natural.

Continuations After 1- 1♠
(As stated above, references to 4-6 hands with a 4-card Major do not apply if using the 2 and 2♠ Openers)

- 3x show a solid or semi-solid 6 or 7-card suit. Continuations are natural with new suits being cue-bids and 3NT showing no particular interest.
- 2♣ Shows a weak 6-card Club suit or 4-5 in the Minors.

- 2 shows a 3-card Heart suit, minimum range (but might be 4-card if Clubs are very weak, not good enough for a 2♣ Opening)

- 2 natural with a 5-card or longer suit, lower range.
- 2♠ natural with a 5-card or longer suit, lower range.

- 3 Shows 6-card Diamonds without a Club stop. Continuations are natural

- 3NT shows a Diamond singleton
Once the singleton suit has been shown, an Eta Ask can be made below game level, thereby setting the suit and enabling subsequent Beta and Epsilons. Otherwise Responder either sets the suit at game level (to play) or may make a Beta Ask in the singleton suit first, but must then set the final contract. All Bids of No Trumps and jumps in the singleton suit are strictly "to play"
- 3♣ shows a lower range hand with 4414 shape (Diamond Singleton)
- 3 shows a lower range hand with 4144 shape (Heart Singleton)
- 3 shows a lower range hand with 1444 shape (Spade Singleton)

When any of the lower range 4441 hands are shown no Eta Asks are permitted. Responder sets the final contract or may make a Beta Ask in the singleton suit first with an especially suitable hand, but must set the final contract thereafter. All Bids of No Trumps and jumps in the singleton suit are strictly "to play"

Continuations After 1- 1NT
1-1NT - 2♣ Shows any hand with 5-card or longer Clubs (including semi-balanced hands).
To all intents this is treated exactly like a 2♣ positive response to a 1♣ Opener except for the low-level Beta which is a Range Beta. Thus
- 2 is Range Beta. Now
- 2 Shows any lower range hand
- 2♠ Shows upper range with 0-2 Controls
- 2NT Shows upper range with 3 Controls
- 3♣ Shows upper range with 4 Controls, etc etc.
New Suits bids over the Range Beta Repsonse are Theta.
Over the 2 and 2♠ responses to the Range Beta, if Responder hands over the Captaincy with 2NT, then Opener should bid along the following lines:-
-2-2/♠-2NT
- 3♣ shows weak 6-card Clubs or 5-card Clubs with 1345 or 3145 shape.
- 3 is a forcing enquiry. Now
- 3 shows 1345 shape or any hand with 6-card Clubs and a 3-card Heart suit (including 3316)
- 3♠ shows 3145 shape or any hand with 6-card Clubs and a 3-card Spade suit (but not 3316)
- 3NT shows any hand with weak 6-card Clubs and no 3-card Major
- 3 shows exactly 2245 shape
- 3 shows any hand with weak 5-card Clubs and 4-card Hearts (ie: not good enough for a 2♣ Openers)
- 3♠ shows any hand with weak 5-card Clubs and 4-card Spades (ie: not good enough for a 2♣ Openers)
- 3NT shows a hand with 6-card Clubs that does not have a 3-card Major or any 5332-shape hand.
All other responses over the 2♣ rebid are exactly as over 1♣-2♣. Thus 2 and 2♠ are Alpha in the suit bid, 2NT is Alpha in Diamonds, and 3♣ is Gamma whether bid directly or preceded by the Range Beta.
- 2 Shows any hand with 5-card or longer Diamonds (including semi-balanced hands).
To all intents this is treated exactly like a 2 positive response to a 1♣ Opener except for the low-level Beta which is a Range Beta. Thus
- 2 is Range Beta. Now
- 2♠ Shows any lower range hand
- 2NT Shows upper range with 0-2 Controls
- 3♣ Shows upper range with 3 Controls, etc etc.
- 3 Shows upper range with 4 Controls, etc etc.
New Suits bids over the Range Beta Repsonse are Theta.
Over the 2♠ response to the Range Beta, if Responder hands over the Captaincy with 2NT, then Opener should bid along the following lines:-
-2-2♠-2NT
- 3♣ shows 5-4 or 5-5 in the Minors.
- 3 shows 6-card Diamonds (with no other 4-card suit except possibly Clubs)
- 3 shows 4-card Hearts with 5-card or longer Diamonds
- 3♠ shows 4-card Spades with 5-card or longer Diamonds
- 3NT shows any 5332-shape hand.
All other responses over the 2 rebid are exactly as over 1♣-2. Thus 2♠ and 3♣ are Alpha in the suit bid, 2NT is Alpha in Hearts, and 3 is Gamma whether bid directly or preceded by the Range Beta.
- 2 Shows any 4441-shape hand.
- 2♠ Asks for the location of the Singleton Suit. Now
- 2NT Shows 4441 with a Singleton Club.
- 3♣ Shows 4414 with a Singleton Diamond.
- 3 Shows 4144 with a Singleton Heart.
- 3 Shows 1444 with a Singleton Spade.
Once Opener has shown where his singleton lies, Responder can make Eta Asks below game level to set the suit, and thereafter Beta in the singleton suit and Epsilons are available. If Responder uses Beta in the singleton suit before setting the suit, then Eta is not available and Responder must set the contract thereafter. (Eta below game level is not always guaranteed to be available)
- 2♠ Shows any 4432 shape hand that is unsuitable for a 1NT Opener. Now
- 2NT is Baron, asking for 4-card suits top be bid up-the-line. All continuations natural.
- 3x are Iota, usually with a marked single-suited or 2-suited hand. Asking Bids are established.
- 2NT Shows any 4333 shape hand that is unsuitable for a 1NT Opener. Now
- 3♣ Asks Opener to bid their 4-card Suit, and Opener responds naturally, 3NT showing 4-card Clubs.
- 3x Is Zeta, setting the suit unconditionally and asking for Controls as per Beta.

Continuations After an Immediate Alpha Ask
After an immediate 2-level Alpha Ask over the 1 Opening, the full range of Asking Bids has been established and the normal rules for repeat Alphas (ie: Theta/Iota) apply.

Multi-Coloured 2

In the Complex System a 2 Opening shows one of the following hand types:
  • A weak 2 in either Major (typically 5-9 points with a 6-card suit), OR
  • 16-23 points and any 4441 distribution, OR
  • 8 Playing Tricks (Acol-style) in a 2-suited hand with at least a 5-card Major and a 6-card Minor, but less than 16 points
The 2 Opening is unconditionally forcing for one round and initial responses are as follows:-
2-2 Shows any hand that wishes to play in 2 opposite a weak-2 in Hearts even if they have game ambitions opposite one of the other hand-types.
2-2♠ Shows any hand that wishes to play in 2♠ opposite a weak-2 in Spades but with game interest if partner has a weak-2 in Hearts (or any other hand-type)
2-2NT Shows any strong hand (or possibly an intermediate one with both Majors) and is unconditionally forcing on Opener to show their hand-type.
2-3/4 Weak and pre-emptive with both Majors (at least 4-4). In using these bids (especially 4) Responder must bear in mind that Opener may be very strong, so these really must only be used on weak hands with shape where the possibility of a slam is remote even if partner has a 23-count.
No other initial responses are permitted

- 4♠ Shows 4441 shape with a singleton Club.
- 4NT Shows 4414 shape with a singleton Diamond.
When any of the stronger 4441 hands have been shown, Eta Asks are permitted. If Responder does not use an immediate Eta Ask and instead uses Beta in the singleton suit, they must set the final contract over the Beta Response. All bids of No Trumps and jumps in the singleton suit are strictly "to play".
- 4♣ Shows the 8-trick hand with Clubs and Hearts. Subsequent bidding is predicated on the assumption that Hearts will be the agreed suit, since Responder has already shown an interest in Hearts. Thus
- 4 Asks about top honours in Opener's long suits. Now
- 4 Shows 3 Top Honours in Clubs and Hearts
- 4♠ Shows 4 Top Honours in Clubs and Hearts
- 4NT Shows 5 Top Honours in Clubs and Hearts
- A Relay over the response to the 4 Ask, is a further enquiry about distribution. Now
1 Step Shows 1516 distribution.
2 Steps Shows 2506, 1606 or 1507 distribution
3 Steps Shows 0526, 0616 or 0517 distribution
If Responder does not make the distribution enquiry, then side-suit bids are Epsilon.
- 4 is strictly "to play".
- 5♣ is strictly "to play".

1 Step Shows 1516 distribution.
2 Steps Shows 2506, 1606 or 1507 distribution
3 Steps Shows 0526, 0616 or 0517 distribution
If Responder does not make the distribution enquiry, then side-suit bids are Epsilon.
- 5 is strictly "to play".
- 4 Shows a maximum weak-2 in Hearts but with no shortage. All continuations natural with 4NT a general slam try asking Opener to cue-bid a side-suit control if they have one.

- 4 Shows 1444 shape with a Spade Singleton
- 4♠ Shows 4441 shape with a Club Singleton
- 4NT Shows 4414 shape with a Diamond Singleton
Responder now sets the suit with an Eta Ask (in which case he has Beta and Epsilons available over the Eta Response) or can make an immediate Beta but then has to set the final contract over the Beta Response. As usual, bids of No Trumps and jumps in the singleton suit are always "to play" unless Responder has initially agreed a Major suit with an Eta Ask.
- 4♣ Shows the 8 trick hand with Clubs and Spades.
- 4 is Gamma in Spades. Asking Bids are now firmly agreed

- 4♠ Shows a minimum weak-2 in Spades. Now
- 4NT is a mild slam try and asks Opener to show a shortage by bidding the suit below.
- 5♠ is invitational to 6♠, but strictly interested only in trump quality. Opener should bid on only if holding at least 2 of the 3 top honours.

- 5♠ Shows 19-21 points and 4441 distribution with a singleton Club.
Over any of the 5-level rebids, Responder now sets the suit with an Eta Ask (in which case he has Beta and Epsilons available over the Eta Response) or can make an immediate Beta but then has to set the final contract over the Beta Response. As usual, bids of No Trumps and jumps in the singleton suit are always "to play" unless Responder has initially agreed a Major suit with an Eta Ask.

Note:- The minimum shape for the 8-trick 2-suiters is a 5-card Major and a 6-card Minor. The scales for Gamma, therefore, have to be adjusted accordingly. HCP should be concentrated in the long suits (hence the very good playing strength on intermediate values). If not meeting these requirements the hand should be opened with 1 or 1♠ rather than 2. The hands that present Precision with something of a problem are those where the Minor suit is longer than the Major suit. Hands that are 6-6 or 6-5 with a 6-card Major can be shown fairly easily using normal methods for the Major suit Openings (or by Opening 1♣).

2 Reverse Roman

In the Complex System a 2 Opening shows 11-15 points and exactly 4-card Hearts with a 6-card or longer Diamond suit. The Opening is not forcing.

Initial Responses
2 - 2♠ is a forcing enquiry. Now
- 2NT shows a singleton Club, lower range.
- 3♣ shows a singleton Spade, lower range.
- 3 shows a void Club, lower range.
- 3 shows a void Spade, lower range.
- 3♠ shows a singleton Club, upper range.
- 3NT shows a void Club, upper range.
- 4♣ shows a singleton Spade, upper range.
- 4 shows a void Spade, upper range.
Once any shortage has been shown the short suit can be used for Beta, but no Epsilons are permitted and Responder must set the final contract over the distribution enquiry or the Beta Ask.
- 2NT is Lebensohl, forcing 3♣. Now
- 3♣ - 3 is strictly "to play"
- 3 is invitational, particularly wanting good trumps as well as an upper range hand.
- 3♠ is strictly "to play"
- 3NT is strictly "to play"
- 4♣ is invitational in Clubs with at least a good 6-card suit.
- 4 is invitational in Diamonds, particularly wanting good trumps as well as an upper range hand.
- 3♣ is Eta in Hearts. A Relay over the Eta Response is Beta and Asking bids are now firmly established.
- 3 is Gamma in Diamonds. A Relay over the Eta Response (excluding 3NT, which would be "to play") is Beta and Asking bids are now firmly established.
- 3 is purely pre-emptive and fundamentally weak
- 4 is purely pre-emptive and fundamentally weak

Over Intervention
Over intervention, double is Lebensohl, forcing a relay with the usual continuations either to play or invitational. An immediate simple bid in either red suit is Eta (in Hearts) or Gamma (in Diamonds), but a jump raise in either suit is purely pre-emptive (but may have decent values if bid at game level). A hand with a penalty double of the intervention must pass, and if Opener is going to re-open, they must do so with a double.

2♠ Reverse Roman

In the Complex System a 2♠ Opening shows 11-15 points and exactly 4-card Spades with a 6-card or longer Diamond suit. The Opening is not forcing.

Initial Responses
2♠ - 2NT is a forcing enquiry. Now
- 3♣ shows a void Heart, lower range.
- 3 shows any lower range hand not containing a void.
- 3 shows a void Club, lower range.
- 3♠ shows a singleton Club, upper range.
- 3NT shows a void Club, upper range.
- 4♣ shows a singleton Heart, upper range.
- 4 shows a void Heart, upper range.
Once any shortage has been shown the short suit can be used for Beta, but no Epsilons are permitted and Responder must set the final contract over the distribution enquiry or the Beta Ask.
- 3♣ is Lebensohl, forcing 3. Now
- 3 - 3 is strictly "to play"
- 3♠ is invitational, particularly wanting good trumps as well as an upper range hand.
- 3NT is strictly "to play"
- 4♣ is invitational in Clubs with at least a good 6-card suit.
- 4 is invitational in Diamonds, particularly wanting good trumps as well as an upper range hand.
- 3 is Gamma in Diamonds. A Relay over the Eta Response (excluding 3NT, which would be "to play") is Beta and Asking bids are now firmly established.
- 3 is Eta in Spades. A Relay over the Eta Response is Beta and Asking bids are now firmly established.
- 3♠ is purely pre-emptive and fundamentally weak
- 4 is purely pre-emptive and fundamentally weak

Over Intervention
Over intervention, double is Lebensohl, forcing a relay with the usual continuations either to play or invitational. An immediate simple bid in either sharp suit is Eta (in Spades) or Gamma (in Diamonds), but a jump raise in either suit is purely pre-emptive (but may have decent values if bid at game level). A hand with a penalty double of the intervention must pass, and if Opener is going to re-open, they must do so with a double.

Multi 3 Opening

In the Complex System, a 3 Opening shows one of the following hand-types and is unconditionally forcing for 1 round:-
  • A 3-level pre-empt in either Major, OR
  • A 4-level pre-empt in either Minor, OR
  • 30-31 Balanced
Initial Responses
The style of initial responses is very similar to that used over the Multi 2 opening, with Responder initially bidding the cheapest suit they are not prepared to support at a higher level. Thus:

3 - 3 shows any hand that wishes to play in 3 opposite a 3-level Heart pre-empt. Responder may have game interest opposite a pre-empt in a different suit.
- 3♠ shows any hand that wishes to play in 3♠ opposite a 3-level Spade pre-empt. Responder will have game interest opposite a Heart pre-empt and may have game interest opposite a pre-empt in a Minor.
- 4♣ shows a hand that wishes to play in 4♣ opposite a 4-level pre-empt in Clubs. Responder will have game interest opposite a pre-empt in either Major and may have game interest opposite a pre-empt in Diamonds.
- 4 shows a hand that wishes to play in 4 opposite a 4-level pre-empt in Diamonds. Responder will have game interest opposite a pre-empt in either Major or Clubs, but has no interest in playing in No Trumps.
This series is open-ended in theory. So 3-4♠, for example, would show a hand wanting to play in game opposite a Spade Pre-empt (or a Minor suit pre-empt), but definitely with slam ambitions opposite a Heart Pre-empt (and possibly opposite a Minor Suit pre-empt too).
A minimum rebid in No Trumps over any of the above responses shows the strong balanced hand. Continuations are as over any NT Rebid that shows a balanced hand (Stayman, 4-suit transfers etc)
- 3NT is a special response showing a strong balanced hand that wishes to play in 3NT opposite a Minor-suit pre-empt, but in game or possibly a slam opposite a Major suit Pre-empt.
- No Shows the Minor suit pre-empt
- 4♣ Shows a good 3-level pre-empt in Hearts
- 4 Asks if a Minor suit shortage is held
- 4 denies having a Minor suit shortage.
- 4♠ is now Beta. Hearts are now agreed and Epsilons are allowed.
- 4♠ shows a Club shortage. Now
- 5♣ is now Beta. Hearts are now agreed and Epsilons are allowed.
- 4NT shows a Diamond shortage. Now
- 5 is now Beta. Hearts are now agreed and Epsilons are allowed.
- 4 is Gamma in Hearts (7-card length assumed). A Relay over the response is Beta. Epsilons are allowed
- 4 Shows a good 3-level pre-empt in Spades
- 4 Asks if a Minor suit shortage is held
- 4♠ denies having a Minor suit shortage.
- 4NT is now Beta. Spades are now agreed and Epsilons are allowed.
- 4NT shows a Club shortage. Now
- 5♣ is now Beta. Spades are now agreed and Epsilons are allowed.
- 5♣ shows a Diamond shortage. Now
- 5 is now Beta. Spades are now agreed and Epsilons are allowed.
- 4♠ is Gamma in Spades (7-card length assumed). A Relay over the response is Beta. Epsilons are allowed
- 4 Shows a poor 3-level pre-empt in Hearts
- 4♠ is Gamma in Hearts (7-card length assumed). A Relay over the response is Beta. Epsilons are allowed
- 4♠ Shows a poor 3-level pre-empt in Spades
- 4NT is Gamma in Spades (7-card length assumed). A Relay over the response is Beta. Epsilons are allowed
- 4NT Shows the strong balanced hand (very unlikely over a 3NT Response)

3 Opening

In the Complex System the 3 Opening is weak and pre-emptive showing 5-9 points and at least 5-5 in the Majors. As with most pre-empts, points should ideally be concentrated in the long suits. With the following two exceptions, responses are entirely natural:
3 - 4♣ is Gamma in Hearts (5-card length assumed). A Relay over the response is Beta and subsequent Epsilons are permitted.
- 4 is Gamma in Spades (5-card length assumed). A Relay over the response is Beta and subsequent Epsilons are permitted.
Immediate bids in either Major are to play unless obviously invitational (eg: at the 5-level, in which case the invitation is asking for trump quality and playing strength rather than necessarily points as such)

Multi 3♠ Opening

In the Complex System, a 3♠ Opening shows one of the following hand-types and is unconditionally forcing for 1 round:-
  • An Acol Gambling 3NT, OR
  • 5-9 points and at least 6-6 in the Minors, OR
  • 11-15 points and at least 6-6 in the Majors, OR
  • 32-33 Balanced
Initial Responses
A relay of 3NT is forced (except in a few instances, as detailed below) and continuations are as follows:

3♠ - 3NT - No shows the Acol Gambling 3NT
- 4♣ shows both Minors. Now all continuations are natural except:
- 4 is Gamma in Clubs (6-card length assumed). A Relay over the response is Beta. Epsilons are permitted.
- 4♠ is Gamma in Diamonds (6-card length assumed). A Relay over the response is Beta. Epsilons are permitted.
- 4 shows both Majors. Now all continuations are natural except:
- 5♣ is Gamma in Hearts (6-card length assumed). A Relay over the response is Beta. Epsilons are permitted.
- 5 is Gamma in Spades (6-card length assumed). A Relay over the response is Beta. Epsilons are permitted.
- 4NT shows the strong balanced hand. Continuations are exactly as over any other NT rebid showing a strong balanced hand (ie: Stayman, Transfers etc).
- 4♣ shows a hand that does not wish to play in 3NT opposite a Gambling 3NT (for whatever reason)
- No shows a Gambling 3NT with Clubs
- 4 shows a Gambling 3NT with Diamonds
- 4 shows both Majors. Now
- 4NT is a general slam try with equal support for both Majors
- 5♣ is Gamma in Hearts (6-card length assumed). Relay over response (not Hearts) is Beta.
- 5 is Gamma in Spades (6-card length assumed). Relay over response (not Spades) is Beta.
- 4♠ shows both Minors. Continuations natural.
- 4NT shows the strong balanced hand. Continuations are as over any strong NT rebid (ie: Stayman, Transfers etc)
- 4 shows a hand that does not wish to play in 3NT opposite a Gambling 3NT (for whatever reason), but one with no further ambitions if partner has the Gambling 3NT based on a Diamond suit, but with game or slam ambitions if partner has Clubs.
- No shows a Gambling 3NT with Diamonds
- 4 shows both Majors. Now
- 4NT is a general slam try with equal support for both Majors
- 5♣ is Gamma in Hearts (6-card length assumed). Relay over response (not Hearts) is Beta.
- 5 is Gamma in Spades (6-card length assumed). Relay over response (not Spades) is Beta.
- 4♠ shows both Minors. Continuations natural.
- 4NT shows the strong balanced hand. Continuations are as over any strong NT rebid (ie: Stayman, Transfers etc)
- 5♣ shows a Gambling 3NT with Clubs
- 4 shows a strong hand with Hearts and both Minors
- 4♠ shows both Majors. Now
- 4NT is Epsilon in Spades (Hearts automatically being agreed here).
- 5♣ is a forcing enquiry, showing 1st round control of Clubs but no first-round control of Diamonds, and asks Opener to bid 6 with a void Diamond (and 5 otherwise).
- 5 is a forcing enquiry, showing 1st round control of Diamonds but no first-round control of Clubs, and asks Opener to bid 6 with a void Diamond (and 5 otherwise).
- 4NT shows both Minors. Continuations natural
- 5♣ shows the Gambling 3NT hand with Clubs. Continuations natural, but if Responder bids again it is a cue-bid with the Minor suit agreed, and opener is invited to cue-bid a shortage if possible.
- 5 shows the Gambling 3NT hand with Diamonds. Continuations natural, but if Responder bids again it is a cue-bid with the Minor suit agreed, and opener is invited to cue-bid a shortage if possible.
- 4♠ shows a strong hand with Spades and both Minors
- 4NT shows both Minors. Continuations natural
- 5♣ shows the Gambling 3NT hand with Clubs. Continuations natural, but if Responder bids again it is a cue-bid with Clubs agreed, and opener is invited to cue-bid a shortage if possible.
- 5 shows the Gambling 3NT hand with Diamonds. Continuations natural, but if Responder bids again it is a cue-bid with Diamonds agreed, and opener is invited to cue-bid a shortage if possible.
- 5 shows both Majors, upper range. Continuations are natural but Spades are automatically agreed
- 5♠ shows both Majors, lower range. Continuations are natural but Spades are automatically agreed
